Columbus Festival: A program of excellence in Porto Santo

The history of Portugal is ingrained in every corner of Porto Santo. Discovered in 1418, a year before Madeira island, by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, Porto Santo marked the beginning of Portugal's great maritime epic, becoming the first overseas territory discovered and colonised in the Atlantic.

The golden years of the Portuguese Discoveries left a deep mark on the second most inhabited island in the Madeira archipelago. This heritage is still evident on the island, embodied in various monuments, including the Casa Colombo – Porto Santo Museum.

It is precisely the legendary navigator Christopher Columbus who gives his name to one of the most emblematic events in the Madeira archipelago: the Columbus Festival. Promoted by the Regional Government of Madeira, through the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture, it is one of Madeira's biggest tourist attractions, drawing thousands of visitors to the golden island.

This festival is an ode to the era of Portuguese discoveries and Christopher Columbus's passage through Porto Santo at the end of the 15th century. It is an event that recreates this historical period, including a 16th-century market, concerts, performances, medieval dances, themed exhibitions and various activities.

To travel back in time and enjoy this authentic medieval and Renaissance experience, simply board the ferry Lobo Marinho to the island of Porto Santo. History, music, dance, circus arts and entertainment are guaranteed!
