Madeira's Levadas and Trails: The Magic of Nature

From the valley to the mountains and from the sea to the hills, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira you can experience nature in a thousand and one ways. Famous for its levadas and footpaths, the region offers unforgettable landscapes and deep contact with the natural environment.

Walking along Madeira's levadas and trails is an unmissable activity for anyone visiting the archipelago. Of enormous historical, economic and social importance, Madeira's levadas have been essential for centuries for transporting water to the population, playing a decisive role in the development of agricultural activity. In addition to contributing to water distribution, they have become true trails that provide direct contact with nature and moments of relaxation and well-being.

The region currently offers 40 classified walking routes, including levadas and trails, for peaceful and safe walking and exploration. Along several trails, you can observe endemic species, contemplate the rich local biodiversity, discover the beautiful Laurissilva Forest — a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site — and even reach the highest peaks of Madeira, such as Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro.

To enjoy these walks safely and comfortably, you should be equipped with appropriate clothing and footwear, water, energy snacks, a mobile phone with battery, a torch and sunscreen. Access to the walking trails requires the payment of fees through the SIMplifica portal of the Regional Government of Madeira. It is essential to comply with the safety rules and instructions of the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation to ensure an enjoyable experience.
